Spring is all about new beginnings, so most of us get inspired to revamp our homes and workspace this season. This is the time when we roll up our sleeves and tackle the house chores we’ve procrastinated doing throughout the year. During the pandemic, many of us did spring cleaning while confined to our homes. But a year later, we want to keep up the cleaning and decluttering regimes because we aim to tidy and freshen up our living space no matter the season.
Spring cleaning also applies to cleaning out the emotional closets we have accumulated over the years. Imagine all the stuff we collect in a year or years, are they really necessary? A lot of these objects are just taking up space and blocking our Qi (Ch’i), our vital energy.
Having a mess in our living space causes stress by overwhelming our senses. However, cleaning physical spaces has a positive effect on our mental space. For example, spring cleaning increases mood, productivity, and creativity. The same goes for organizing our home office; having papers and gadgets spread all over our desks hinders our productivity. But the opposite promotes focus and calmness.
Think of spring cleaning as a boost for your mind and self-esteem since it allows us to emotionally detach from stuff we’ve accumulated. Letting go of these items serves as mental space decluttering, bringing us motivation and joy.
Here are a few tips you can implement this spring to make your living and workspace more enticing.
Bring the outdoors inside:
Having a plant or plants in your home office not only keeps you happy but also oxygenates the room. Breathe some life into your office space with a plant or two. If you don’t have a green thumb, a cactus or some succulents will do the work, and they require little work. A little bit of green in your space has a positive effect on your psyche.
Let there be light:
Remove items blocking your windows or dark curtains that prevent light from entering the room. There’s nothing like natural light to lift your spirits, especially after a long winter.
Be creative—use your walls as your canvas:
Don’t neglect your workspace; add some color to your walls by hanging beautiful and colorful artwork. If you don’t have the budget, create your own art. If your budget allows it, you can paint the walls in cheerful colors.
Use the power of crystals:
How about bringing positive energy to your workspace by adding beautiful crystals? They don’t have to be big. You can place a few stones in a small plate or bowl or one big one on your desk to improve your workflow. Clear quartz cleans negative energy. Amethyst alleviates anxiety and sadness. How about black tourmaline? It keeps you grounded and productive as it removes unwanted energy. Choose your favorite stone and create a clean energy space on your desk.
Clean space equals productivity:
Having a clutter-free home or workspace destresses you and improves your focus. Remember that whatever we see, our brain registers it as positive or negative. A messy room feels heavy and strips us of our concentration.
Fresh scents mean cleanliness:
A vase of fresh flowers is always inviting. How about burning incense or having a citrus or pine scent diffuser? Something as simple as the fresh smell in our personal space can improve our mood and reduce stress.
An organized living space lifts emotional weight:
Walking into your favorite space when it’s organized and clean makes you feel accomplished and light. Something as simple as decluttering and rearranging can do wonders for your mental and emotional state.
